This bus was supplied by ST Kinetics, a dealer of MAN trucks and buses, and comes about three months since the introduction of the Volvo B7RLE Demonstrator, SBS 8030L. It is also the second MAN bus owned by SBS Transit after it's 16.240 counterpart, SBS 0081S, which has been deregistered. Thereafter registered SBS 8031J, this new MAN 18.240 HOCL-NL Demonstrator resembles that of SBS Transit's Scania K230UB - the bodywork is made by Malaysia's Gemilang Coachworks. However, following MAN's recommendations to have a customised look, it's front was actually modeled to a Lion City front instead. A D0836 (LOH52) engine from MAN AG powers up the bus, connected to a Voith DIWA 854.5 transmission. Alongside with its usual whistles and bells, the bus also boasts some new features not found in new single deck wheelchair accessible buses introduced earlier. New to this bus is seating for five elderly, the disabled and passengers with children instead of the usual four, in order to showcase the MAN's ability of a small wheel hub. The performance of the bus has been given a thumbs up by bus fans, most significantly the absence of vibration and noise from the engine, which is noted in the Scania K230UB. ]]> Thu Jan 11 2007 Event: Nissan Diesel U31RCN Farewell Tour http://sbs9199c.fotopic.net/c1534952.html Bus enthusiasts organised a farewell tour on the Nissan Diesel U31RCN. This was in lieu of the earlier announcements that SMRT Buses would withdraw all 65 units of the Nissan buses and the Scania L113CRL with ELBO bodywork combined. The tour was held on the afternoon and evening of Saturday, 6 Dec 2008, which was shortly a few days after several units of UDs (the trademark name for this fleet of buses) withdrew from Service 852 in large numbers. This tour was the first time in the Farewell Tour history that two buses were chartered simultaneously - one was an Original Air-con, CSS 0185P, which was one of the affected buses that went out of Service 852 a day before the tour. The same bus is to head to it's next 'home' on Service 981 after the tour. The other one, a Converted Air-con, CSS 0194M, has been serving Service 975 for several months and is the sole-remaning bus on that service at the time of the tour. The tour went round several historical places in Singapore, with parts of it's route largely concentrating on those where the former City Shuttle Services had plied before, which included Services 603, 605 and 608. In addition, the buses went to some of Singapore's most deserted places, with one of them being Seletar West where only SBS Transit's Service 103M plys this road. It is unclear of the number of these Sprinters Bus Plus, subsididary of SMRT, has brought in, but six units of these buses have been registered and are put in service thereafter. Deployment of these buses first came during SMRT's launch of six Premium Services on 8 September 2008, namely 586, 589, 590, 597, 598 and 599. They were also recently used for a free bus bridging service during the road closures leading up to Singapore's first F1 Night Race. Kelantan is a state in Malaysia located in the North of West Malaysia close to the Thai border, specifically, the Thai state of Narathiwat. The Arabic honorific of the state is Darul Naim, ("The Blissful Abode"). Kelantan's capital is Kota Bharu, located some 40 km off the two Thai borders (namely Pengkalan Kubor and Rantau Panjang). Envisoned as an Islamic City under the control of PAS, the muslims make up the majority of the population in Kota Bharu. Special rules such as the ban on dressing too fashionably and separate check-out counters for males and females are being put in place for this city. As this place shares part of the Thai border, several Thai-styled temples ("Wats") can be seen around the state. Of particular interest is the Wat Phothivihan located in Tumpat in the sleepy town of Jambu, where it's famed for having Southeast Asia's longest sleeping Buddha spanning 40 metres. Some other attractions in Kelantan include the market near the Kelantan River (located off Jalan Pintu Pong) as well as Pantai Cahaya Bulan (Love Beach) located 10 km off the capital. The Syarikat Kendeeran Melayu Kelantan (SKMK) is the main bus operator of Kelantan. Operated by the Konsortium Transnasional Berhad (KTB) under the name and livery of Cityliner and Transnasional, they have a fleet of over a thousand buses spread out in several areas of Kelantan and several long distance bus routes taking the passengers from a city to another city in Kelantan. It is of significant note that buses there have longer frequencies (with one of the routes making only one trip per day) and do not ply the roads overnight. Long distance overnight buses located at the external bus terminal at Jalan Hazmah (outside KB Mall), takes passengers to the other states of West Malaysia. It was then registered SBS 8030L and kept inside Hougang Depot (HGDEP) awaiting to be deployed on Service 62. However, it was deployed to Service 174 instead, under the control of Soon Lee Depot (SLBP). Some had joked that the deployment was because of SBS 0997A, which was deployed to Service 62 after a trial on Service 174 as well. SBS Transit's intention, however, was to have both demonstrators (the other being SBS 8033D, a Scania K230UB) under the same depot. The morning of 10 Jan 2008 was it's maiden trip on Fast Forward 174e. A review of the bus, which was fitted with a Volvo D7E engine and mated to a ZF 6HP592C gearbox, was followed by a thumbs up from several bus fans for it's good performance. It's bodywork however, has attracted widespread attention. Several have critisized about the front's resemblance to that of a "transformer"; some have noted that the front have a similar design to that of the newer Hippo Tour open-top buses [BIH Bus Culture]. The bus still serves Service 174 today, after it's two month short stint on mid-haul trunk Service 185 (Soon Lee Depot to Buona Vista). However, it no longer plies on Fast Forward 174e. The first such fleet of 50 buses were fitted with Walter Alexander bodyworks and are powered by a 11 020cc Scania DSC1171 engine connected to a ZF 4HP500 transmission. They are registered in the ranges of TIB 0562C to TIB 0571B and TIB 0635B to TIB 0674M. The following year, TIBS brought in again 15 more units of such buses to be fitted with Greek ELBO bodies. The transmission model is similiar to their Walter Alexander counterparts. However, these buses are powered by a 11 967cc Scania DSC11 engine instead. Initially non-aircon, they were retrofitted with Hispacold air-conditioning during SMRT's fleet upgrading exercise in 2002. They are registered in the ranges of TIB 0839E to TIB 0848D. This fleet of 65 buses has been the subject of critisim by most of the general public as well as the bus enthusiasts for being a bus that "vibrates violently when idle". The ELBO fleet was even said to be a "sauna". As a result, the ELBO fleet of the Scania L113CRL would be one such kind of bus that would be withdrawn earlier than the expected lifespan expiry date. TIB 0565U and TIB 0666L received orange-coloured LAWO EDSes. They were retrofitted with the new EDS as their old EDSes have been damaged during previous accidents. The former serves Service 966 (Woodlands to Marine Parade); the latter serves Service 960 (Woodlands to Marina Centre). The first batch of 201 such buses were fitted with a 9 600cc Volvo TD102KF engine and bore the familiar red seats. They are registered within the ranges of SBS 9200G to SBS 9400X, of which the first 101 had emergency exits on the upper deck as well as the lower deck. The subsequent two batches of this type of bus featured a Volvo D10A engine with a similar engine capacity of 9 600cc. The second batch were registered as SBS 9401T to SBS 9600K. The last batch were registered as SBS 9601H to SBS 9670H. These two batches of buses are most easily recognised by their yellow textured grab poles. Due to their large fleet, the Volvo Olympian can be found operating on several services islandwide. They are widely known by many as their original tagline "Superbus". A total of 200 units, one-quarter of them being the Original Air-con (OAC) and the remaining being the Non Air-con (NAC) buses, were purchased. The fleet underwent major changes in the 1990s and continued into the new millenium. The gearbox was changed to that of a Voith from the original Scania and a big number of NACs were converted to become Converted Air-con (CAC) buses. Only 63 units of the NACs were not converted and continued their service. These buses now come under control of SBS Transit's Bedok North Depot (BNDEP) and can be found serving on several Bedok, Tampines and Pasir Ris services, especially feeder Services 225, 228, 229, 292 and 354. As these buses have served their 20 years of service on the roads, they are to be progressively withdrawn, with the last batch of these buses to be decommissioned by 6 May 2009. NOTE: The last batch of Scania N113CRB NAC buses will be deregistered and withdrawn on 8 Dec 2008. These buses will also be the last ever single-deck NAC buses by public bus companies existing in Singapore. SBS 0073R is one of the most notable buses in the fleet. It's interior underwent refurbishing sometime in 2005 to 2006 and was fitted with new seat covers (green and yellow). The bus in addition has a new ticket dispenser with a specialised holder. It formerly serves Service 3, but was taken off and became a spare bus after the Scania K230UBs came into the same service. The bus has since then resettled onto Service 32 (Bedok to Buona Vista). The next two batches of Mark 4s, using Duple Metsec and Walter Alexander Strider bodyworks, came into service in 1995, totalling 315. A further 105 units, this time fitted with a more rectangular DM3500 bodywork, were introduced between 1997 and 2001. Completing the fleet are the 10 out of 20 leftovers from SBS Leisure and were given 'SBS' license plates in 2004. All 430 buses have at least a Volvo engine fitted along with either a Voith or ZF transmission. Owing to the vast numbers of this kind of buses, they can be found anywhere within the SBS Transit controlled territory. A hot spot for these kind of buses can be found along the Orchard Road belt, most particularly the three Cityshopper services (578, 579, 581). However, 8 such units of buses with the PSV bodywork could only be found exclusively on Service 78 (Jurong East to Clementi). The remaining two are for training purposes and are kept solely at Hougang Depot (HGDEP). It is a single deck low-entry Wheelchair Accessible bus (WAB) that SBS Transit claims it 'scores many firsts'. Features of this bus include an Euro IV engine which emit fewer harmful particles, two Passenger In Wheelchair (PIW) spaces at the front of the bus and several safety features such as an anti-braking system. These buses were first introduced on the roads on 1 November 2007, with Services 100 and 174 making debut. Following that, several other units of such buses were introduced progressively on the roads. They can now be found serving several services around the island (please check the Bus Info Hub website for details). 400 more units of such buses have been ordered, bringing the total to 900 units. These 400 units ("Batch 3") are said to boast the more environmentally-friendly Euro V engines as well as the stricter enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle (EEV) standard. Deliveries are scheduled to take place in 2009. SBS 8033D is a demonstrator of the fleet. Fitted with a different bodywork and furbished with a different interior, it previously served on Service 174, Fast Forward 174e and then on Service 51 from 8 May. However, it was once again exchanged with SBS 8436A and now serves Service 183 on a Split shift duty.
